Hold the lighter upright. Depress the filler valve in the bottom with a ballpoint pen or fondue stick, or whatever. That will “bleed” the tank of any trapped air which, if left inside the tank, will lead to erratic operation. Once the tank is bled empty, invert the lighter. Place the nozzle of a butane tank onto the filler valve, press and hold the butane firmly down for a few seconds. Repeat once or twice more. When it’s full, usually you will feel some butane “blow-back” hitting your skin.
